The Newbury School of Ki Aikido

Aikido may be described as one of the most subtle and sophisticated of all the martial arts. It is not only an effective self defence system but also a method of strengthening the mind and body to produce a more integrated person. The art was originally developed by Master Morihei Ueshiba from movements contained within the arts of sword and spear fighting in jujitsu, Aiki jutsu and other schools of martial arts. Aikido differs from other martial arts in that it is related directly to defence against unprovoked attacks. There are no aggressive or attacking movements in Aikido, only techniques to redirect and neutralise any attacking force. The nature of Aikido is similar to the Chinese health system of Tai Chi in that it can be practised by people all ages and gender to promote the flexibility to your body and coordination of mind. The defensive techniques to not require strength and can be mastered equally by men and women.

Through Aikido individuals can develop a complete defence against attack. Aikido helps to build up stamina, speed of reaction, flexibility, fitness and overall health. Students develop a calm mind and internal confidence, a positive attitude as well as mental, emotional and physical stability. Movements in both the exercises and techniques of Aikido help correct body posture and reverse stress and tension by concentrating on relaxation. These repeated exercises and patterns ultimately instill calm relaxed responses to all situations.
